Sustainability
Celebrating sustainability and empowering you to live a more sustainable life is at the very heart of everything we do
You Are What You Wear
Everything we do at Ada Dakin has been passionately and thoughtfully considered from start to finish. We embrace slow fashion with each showstopping garment entirely made-to-order by an East London manufacturer which allows us to ensure that we never make more than we sell, eliminating waste and overproduction, benefitting the planet, you and ourselves.
Our swoon-worthy pieces have been carefully designed to hit high on the ‘cost per wear’ scale by being eternally loved and cherished.
Prints
Prints are our passion, but so is our planet!
Our design process harnesses the power and elegance of hand-drawn and painted custom prints from skilled British designers, with each pattern representing a part of nature.
We digitally print all of our designs direct to garment, which is a more environmentally-aware process than any other printing methods as it reduces chemical waste by only using the specified amount of ink required for each design. There is no wastage in the set-up of the printing equipment thanks to the advanced technology of digital printing as our digitally submitted files are programmed straight into the printer’s machinery, which also eliminates the need for any excess electricity or water. In fact the minimal amount of water is required for digital printing because ink pigments are fixated by heat instead of steaming and washing.
Our chosen UK based printers are a family-owned socially responsible company equally as committed to our values, pairing OEKO-TEX Certified Azo-free non-toxic inks which are biodegradable, and zero-waste sublimation printing methods for a truly environmentally aware garment.
Made in Britain
Empowered women have the world at their fingertips to empower others
We partner closely with our chosen small business suppliers, local manufacturers and independent artists who share the same ethical and sustainable values as ourselves, whilst being committed to the highest quality possible. We regularly visit all of our UK based suppliers to verify the standards of our entire supply chain and ensure that they meet our very high standards and provide healthy, happy and safe workplaces for their employees. We hold a signed ‘Manufacturer Declaration’ from our Stratford, East London manufacturer which confirms that their business and treatment of their employees is aligned with the International Labour Organisations Declaration on the Fundamental Principles and Right at Work, namely:
Employment is freely chosen;
Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining;
Safe and hygienic workplace;
No child labour;
Fair remuneration;
Decent working hours;
No discrimination;
No forced labour or trafficking.
For the careful creation of our patterns, samples and grading we draw on the expertise and craftsmanship of our close collaboration with a local social enterprise based in Limehouse, London which creates training and employment opportunities for women facing marginalisation. This same social enterprise often runs textiles classes for children so we prioritise donating any leftover fabrics or trimmings directly to them.
At Ada Dakin HQ, our Founder Sophie is the only human worker. However Peach the pooch does put in some very important part-time hours by being a dog model and attending Zoom meetings!
With everything made in Britain and produced in local communities by employees earning more than the local minimum wage and working in safe and hygienic conditions, the inspirational women responsible for making the collection drive it forward with enriching stories to tell.
Waste to Wear
We have left no sustainable stone unturned, from recycled PET filament fabric to our Natulon zips.
Our zips are made from environmentally friendly Natulon which is eternally recyclable. Both innovative and adaptable products created by recycling and reforming discarded plastics and resulting in a fabulously low carbon footprint, less water to produce and creating 70% less CO2 emissions than regular polyester.
Our woven name and care labels are made from Newlife™ yarn which is made from 100% recycled post consumer plastic bottles and is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certified.
Our fabrics and trims are produced as responsibly as possible to guarantee a lower impact on our planet. Belle Voluminous Top and Charlotte Midi Skirt are made from Regenesis fabric which is Global Recycled Standard Certified, SCS and OEKO-Tex Certified Recycled P.E.T., made entirely from rPET consumer waste like plastic bottles. It is a beautifully soft and luxurious fabric which is easy to care for and can last a lifetime.
Regenesis fabric is great, however it is ultimately a synthetic fabric and as such will still shed microfibres when washed which could trickle their way into the ocean.
We constantly want to strive to improve, with our vision being for the brand to be circular, so the remainder of our styles are made from LENZING™ ECOVERO™ which is derived from certified renewable wood sources from responsibly managed forests, protecting our old endangered forests. ECOVERO™ has up to 50% lower water impact, up to 50% lower CO2 emissions and is certified with the EU Ecolabel, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). ECOVERO™ is biodegradable and compostable and if it does end up in landfill it will biodegrade entirely over a few months without releasing any toxic chemicals into the soil, unlike virgin polyester which can take up to 200 years.
We strongly advise that you wash all Ada Dakin garments on a cool 30 degrees cycle and hang dry…do not tumble dry. Both Regenesis and Ecovero fabrics barely crease so we recommend steaming rather than ironing.
Carbon Footprint
Our planet is in the middle of a climate emergency, so we take our responsibility to reduce carbon emissions extremely seriously.
We research far and wide for sustainable suppliers who are actively committed to reducing their own carbon footprint and who place environmental issues at the very heart of their social responsibility agenda. We do not use a large factory for manufacturing, preferring a more personal approach so our Stratford-based manufacturer is a small operation of under 10 employees who create all garments by hand and prioritise the cutting of patterns, reusing offcuts of excess fabric to create scrunchies and recycling to ensure zero waste. They also guarantee that they use the most efficient and energy saving sewing equipment with energy class A on the Energy Efficiency Index.
Ada Dakin is made-to-order so aside from holding a few samples for photoshoots and to assess the perfect fit for each garment style, we pioneer the reduction of textile waste by only producing that which has been ordered.
The average garment travels between 7 countries before arriving on the shop floor but we’re trying to rely on UK based road travel as much as possible…our London sampling, production and trim meetings are attended by trusty bicycle! Our fabric is the only non-domestic element in our story as the Regenesis fabric originates from Taiwan before it is sent to the UK for printing. ECOVERO™ is made in Austria so has far less distance to travel before it can be printed on, however we are eternally actively searching for UK-made fabrics to use to tick this last component off our ‘UK Made’ list!
We recycle all packaging which we personally receive, and ensure that our suppliers have similar recycling systems in place.
Our Packaging
There is no perfect solution to eco-friendly packaging, however the only plastic you’ll see at Ada Dakin is the fabric which your beautiful pieces are made from!
All of our shipping boxes, tissue paper, tape and stickers are made from recycled materials and are home compostable so please remember to discard them along with any food or compost waste you have.
Look out for a little treat in every Ada Dakin delivery, our thank you cards and swing tags are made of biodegradable seed paper, ready for you to plant and grow your very own beautiful wildflower field! Our swing tags are tied to our garments using sustainable hemp cord.
